The product inflow and outflow from the inventories were very much in alliance, pharma and pesticide industries also supported the market dynamics with a positive downstream outlook. However, as time progressed and the fourth quarter began, the sodium monochloroacetate price trajectory became relatively tepid.

The subdued demands started contradicting the oversupplied inventories. And as the supply chain issues started mounting up following the Red Sea crisis, the global orders crashed even further. This forced the sodium monochloroacetate prices down in the latter quarter. Overall, mixed market sentiments were witnessed.

Europe

The European sodium monochloroacetate market’s performance during the said time period was in contradiction with its Asian counterparts. Since the inventories were already exhausted at the beginning of the third quarter, the price trend tottered low during this time. However, as the fourth quarter arrived and the inventories got some space, the demands too started rising again. With this, the price graph was shifted in the upward direction, and thus, a very blended market trajectory was witnessed.

North America

The North American sodium monochloroacetate market mimicked the market behavior of its Asian counterpart closely during the said time period of H2’23. The price graph started low initially, however, then started picking up by the middle of the third quarter. The inclination in the prices was very minimal but helped sustain suppliers’ confidence. The year-ending month was comparatively weak as the freight hurdles brought the demands down again. Overall, oscillating market behavior was observed.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the Sodium Monochloroacetate price trends are likely to continue wavering as per the current supply and demand dynamics in the coming months as well.

Sodium Monochloroacetate (SMCA) Price Trend for the First Half of 2023

Asia

The dynamics of the sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) market were dependent on the trend depicted by its feedstock, monochloroacetic acid. In the initial phase of the first quarter, the trend of sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) prices oscillated on account of volatility in the demand from the downstream agrochemical and dyes sectors.

The decline in sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) prices began in the latter part of the first quarter. The sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) prices plummeted due to the slower economic recovery in the Asia Pacific after a long stretch of COVID restrictions and the holiday season in China. During the second quarter, these problems persisted, and along with that, the reduced freight costs, and a drop in global sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) demand further drove prices down.

Europe

The first quarter witnessed a see-saw trend in the prices of sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) as they rose initially with the help of a revival of market activities after the holiday season. The steady rates of production and overall supply of sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) also supported the incline in the prices during this phase. However, in the second half of this quarter and throughout the second quarter, the trend of sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) prices struggled with increasing inventory levels, rising cost of production, and low appetite of consumers.

North America

The initial incline in the prices of sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) in the first quarter was a result of high demand from the downstream industries and low rates of production. However, similarly to the Asia Pacific and European countries, the prices began to decline in the second half of the first quarter. The major causes of the downfall of the market trend of sodium mono chloroacetate (SMCA) were the decline in feedstock costs and the downward movement of demand from the downstream industries.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the price trend of Sodium Monochloroacetate (SMCA) is estimated to struggle with the low demand from the downstream industries and fall in the cost of feedstock materials.

Sodium Monochloroacetate Price Trend for the Second Half of 2022

Asia

The prices of sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) plunged as the demand from the domestic sector fell significantly. The fall in feedstock prices, uncertainties in the agrochemical industries, and rise in inventories led to the decline in the price trend for Sodium monochloro acetate.

The prices were further affected by the weak economic conditions, disruption of the supply-demand equilibrium, and the after-effects of covid restrictions and zero covid policy adopted by China. The market, owing to the rise in inventories and declining demand along with several other factors, failed to gain the required momentum. Thus, the price trend of Sodium monochloro acetate dipped.

Europe

The price trend for sodium monochloroacetate was opposite to that observed in the Asia Pacific region. The price trend was able to secure momentum from previous quarters. The region witnessed a variety of events that affected the prices of the commodity. First, the inclining rates of energy production and second, the rise in inflation in the region were the forerunners in driving the sodium monochloroacetate prices. However, the prices fluctuated a little in the fourth quarter. This mixed trend was attributed to the disruptions in the supply chain due to port congestion activities, a decline in freight costs, and weak demand from agrochemical, dyes, and other end-user industries.

North America

The North American region fell victim to the aftershocks of the prolonged fluctuating market and rising inflation in the region. The prices were somewhat stable during the initial months of the third quarter but soon fell due to weak demand from the downstream derivative market and rising uncertainties in the agrochemical and other related industries.

This unsettling trend was not only limited to the domestic market but also showed signs of international demand dynamics. In addition to this, the prices of raw materials plummeted, and the supply chains remained disrupted throughout the third and fourth quarters of 2022, negatively impacting the price trend for sodium monochloroacetate.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the price trend for sodium monochloroacetate (SMCA) will likely fluctuate in the upcoming quarter. The fluctuation in the prices will be due to rising market uncertainties, sea-saw demand from end-user industries, and unsteady cost pressure from the feedstock materials.

Sodium Monochloro Acetate (SMCA) Price Trend For the First Half of 2022

Asia

The price of feedstock monochloroacetic acid and caustic soda surged throughout China during the first quarter. The soaring crude oil prices, reduced operating rates, lowered inventories, and raised feedstock costs caused the prices of SCMA to surge rapidly. The robust demand from the downstream sectors coupled with low production volumes caused the price trend of SCMA to incline.

The feedstock monochloroacetic acid price averaged 1443 USD/MT in the Chinese domestic market. With high-cost inflation and expensive trade logistics, the market demand started dwindling. The baulking of buyers amid the looming threat of recession negatively impacted the prices of feedstocks. The prices of monochloroacetic acid averaged 995 USD/MT while that of caustic soda averaged 1208.1 RMB/MT during the end of said period.

Europe

The prices of sodium monochloroacetate ( SMCA) fluctuated across the European region during the said period. Initially despite the rising operating costs and supply disruptions from the Black Sea and Baltic Sea the costs of feedstock monochloroacetic acid kept stable owing to low demands from downstream.

However, with high-cost inflation and renewed demands the producers raised the quotations for SCMA to maintain profitability.  The price of monochloroacetic acid averaged 2020 USD/MT. These inflated feedstock prices kept the price trend of SMCA anchored in the European market.

North America

The prices for SCMA kept firm throughout the US domestic market. The raised feedstock quotation coupled with high energy costs, complex logistics and labour shortages amid budding downstream demand cause the SMCA prices to surge consistently. The price of monochloroacetic acid averaged 1990 USD/MT while that of caustic soda averaged 810 USD/MT FOB US Gulf.

About

Sodium Monochloro Acetate is a powdered white coloured solid. It is water soluble.  It is used to synthesize drugs, colours, and herbicides. SMCA is used in the production of a number of beneficial substances, including medicines, dyes, agrochemicals, and thickening agents. The strong reactivity of the product's C-Cl bond is utilised in the majority of reactions.

It is widely utilised as a thickening agent in detergents, oil drilling, paper, food, and pharmaceutical applications; in the production of agrochemicals like insecticides (such as dimethoates) and herbicides (such as 2,4-D and MCPA); and as a starting point for betaines. The creation of vitamins, artificial caffeine, malonates, and glycine are further applications.
