Permethrin Production From 1,1-Dichloro-4-Methyl-1,3-Pentadiene
Production Cost Report | Agriculture, Farming and Commodity
Details: Germany - based plant Q2 2024 | From $ USD
This report proffers the thorough economics of permethrin production from 1,1-dichloro-4-methyl-1,3-pentadiene. The production process begins with the chemical reaction between 1,1-dichloro-4-methyl-1,3-pentadiene and ethyl diazoacetate in the presence of a metal catalyst, i.e., copper. The reaction results in the formation of ethyl (±)-cis, trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl) cyclopropane carboxylate, which on hydrolysis yields ethyl (±)-cis,trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)cyclopropanecarboxylic acid (a cis-trans-isomer), as an intermediate.
The reaction is further processed by separating the cis-isomer from the trans-isomer by treating the intermediate acid with n-hexane. In the reaction, the cis-isomer dissolves in n-hexane, and the trans-isomer precipitates out. The precipitate of trans-isomer is then filtered and reacted with 3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol, resulting in the production of permethrin as the end product.

Feedstock for Permethrin
Permethrin is an agrochemical compound produced by using 1,1-dichloro-4-methyl-1,3-pentadiene and ethyl diazoacetate as its major feedstock. The procurement of permethrin is governed by some major factors, including the availability of its raw materials (chlorine, 2-butyne-1,4-diol, ethanol, etc., that are used for the production of 1,1-dichloro-4-methyl-1,3-pentadiene and ethyl diazoacetate), its production cost, variations in its market prices and logistics, etc. Moreover, other factors, such as the demand observed for permethrin in the downstream industries (as an agrochemical variety for insecticides and pesticide production), along with the financial conditions and governmental policies, altogether determine its global procurement.
