The inaugural operation of China's 10,000-ton green hydrogen refinery project has commenced

China Green Hydrogen Manufacturing Unit

Sinopec, a Chinese energy company, has made a significant breakthrough in making green hydrogen. In their very first 10,000-ton demonstration project, the company has successfully produced green hydrogen, which is a highly coveted and sustainable fuel source.

The hydrogen has been transported to the local petroleum refineries and used as an alternative power source, replacing natural gas. This is an important achievement because it marks the first instance where China has fully integrated the entire industrial chain of the 10,000-ton green hydrogen refining project from production to utilization.

In May 2022, LONGi Hydrogen, a reputable company that specializes in large-scale electrolyzers and green hydrogen production solutions, successfully secured the bid for the project. The project involved the use of 16 sets of LONGi Hydrogen's 1000Nm³/h electrolyzers, which were expertly implemented using a "4 to 1" system. Notably, this system involved the use of four electrolyzers and one gas-liquid separation skid, which is a unique approach that has never been implemented before.

The project's capacity is such that it can produce up to 20,000 metric tons of hydrogen each year. Furthermore, this is the first-ever 10,000-ton photovoltaic green hydrogen demonstration project in China, which is a considerable accomplishment. It provides a replicable and promotable demonstration case for the development of the green hydrogen industry and PV-based hydrogen production worldwide.

It is important to note that the green hydrogen produced in this project is derived directly from renewable energy sources, and as such, it does not emit any greenhouse gases. The refining industry will immensely benefit from this project by utilizing green hydrogen for carbon reduction purposes.

The upcoming project aims to provide environmentally friendly green hydrogen to nearby petroleum refining companies, effectively replacing the use of natural gas and resulting in a significant reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 485,000 tons annually. By doing so, this initiative will establish a novel means of refining green hydrogen and showcase its potential industrial application, ultimately advancing the transformation and modernization of the energy sector.
