GAIL Nears Completion of 3,306-km Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga Pipeline; 96.6% Operational

GAIL's Urja Ganga Pipeline Hits 97% Completion

GAIL (India) Limited is nearing completion of its ambitious Jagdishpur-Haldia-Bokaro-Dhamra Pipeline (JHBDPL) project, popularly known as the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga initiative. The company reports that 97.6% of the pipeline's physical construction has been finished, with 96.6% already operational. This massive 3,306 km natural gas network, which includes the Barauni-Guwahati extension, traverses six states - Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Assam - significantly enhancing energy infrastructure across eastern India.

Currently, 3,227 km of pipeline has been laid, with 3,119 km actively supplying natural gas to various consumers. The operational sections include critical links like Phulpur-Dobhi-Bokaro-Durgapur, Bokaro-Angul-Dhamra, and Dobhi-Barauni-Guwahati. The pipeline is currently transporting approximately 12.26 million standard cubic meters of gas daily, serving four fertilizer plants, two major refineries (Barauni and Paradip), numerous industrial units, and 32 City Gas Distribution networks in key urban centers including Varanasi, Patna, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata.

The remaining work focuses on completing the Durgapur-Haldia and Dhamra-Haldia sections. While 132 km of the 294 km Durgapur-Haldia stretch up to Kolkata is already operational, progress continues on the remaining 162 km, with 103 km laid so far. Similarly, in the 240 km Dhamra-Haldia section, 198 km has been completed. GAIL has revised the project completion timeline to December 2025, citing delays in obtaining Right of Use permissions. Once finished, these final segments will extend gas supply to Haldia refinery and serve additional districts including Howrah, Hooghly, and Medinipur, further boosting industrial development and clean energy access in the region.
