Orica refines its CO2 abatement objectives after installing emissions control system at its Kooragang Island ammonia facility
Orica, an Australian chemicals and explosives company, has revised its carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction goals after implementing an emissions control system at its Kooragang Island ammonia facility in New South Wales. The company has now set a target to decrease its net operational scope 1 and 2 emissions by a minimum of 45% by 2030, using 2019's emission levels of 2.09 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) and 242,000 tonnes CO2e as reference.

This new target surpasses their prior commitment of a 40% reduction. Additionally, by 2026, Orica plans to achieve a 30% reduction from 2019 levels. They've also introduced an objective to cut scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2035, using 2022's baseline of 6.54 million tonnes CO2e.
Sanjeev Gandhi, Orica's managing director, emphasized the company's proactive approach towards climate change, forecasting a 19% emissions decrease by the end of the 2023 fiscal year. Gandhi added that the company is intensifying its commitments and widening their range, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.
This vision aligns with Orica's strategy to adapt to a world transitioning to lower carbon emissions. The company's upgraded targets are largely attributed to their tertiary catalyst abatement technology system, which has notably curtailed greenhouse gas emissions by at least 98% from their ammonia, nitric acid, and ammonium nitrate operations at the Kooragang Island site.
According to the article by Procurement Resource, Orica, an Australian firm specializing in chemicals and explosives, has bolstered its carbon reduction goals following the introduction of an emissions control system at its Kooragang Island facility. The company aims for a 45% reduction in its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, up from their previous 40% target, using 2019 levels as a benchmark.

Furthermore, they've set their sights on a 30% cut by 2026 and a 25% reduction in scope 3 emissions by 2035 from 2022 levels. Sanjeev Gandhi, Orica's managing director, envisions a 19% emissions decline by 2023 and net-zero emissions by 2050. This enhancement in targets is attributed to Orica's tertiary catalyst abatement technology, which slashed greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 98% at their Kooragang site.
