Wheat production in Egypt for 2024-25 is projected to register a rise Y-O-Y basis
Egypt’s wheat production is projected to increase in the 2024-25 season, influenced by government initiatives aimed at expanding the area for wheat cultivation and improving crop yields. The primary reason attributed to the anticipated rise in wheat production stems from a boost in purchases owing to a global reduced rate.
Estimates suggest a rise in production to 9.2 million tonnes, up from 8.87 million tonnes the previous year. The rise in procurement prices has also motivated farmers to grow more wheat. Wheat imports are anticipated to reach 12.5 million tonnes, reflecting a slight rise from earlier estimates, though staying consistent with the previous season.
Improved access to foreign currency has enabled the release of previously held shipments and facilitated the import of essential goods, including wheat, for both the public and private sectors. Additionally, the decline in global wheat prices has encouraged both sectors to increase purchases at reduced rates.

Egypt has expanded its wheat flour exports, with key destinations including Sudan, Eritrea, Yemen, and Somalia, among others. The first five months of the year saw a 250% rise in flour exports compared to the previous year, with significant growth in exports to Djibouti, Sudan, and the West Bank. Factors like regional instability, including the Israel-Hamas crisis and conflicts in the Red Sea, have contributed to this surge in exports.
