It is a major part of coconut and palm kernel oil. The acid appears to be a powdery, white crystalline acid with a feeble smell of oil of bay. It is sparingly soluble in water. It dissolves more easily in non-polar solvents, such as some alcohols and haloalkanes than in polar solvents, such as phenols. It is non-toxic, cheap, safe to handle, and has a longer shelf life. It has a molar mass of 200.32 g/mol. Its melting point is 44–46 ºC.
