TotalEnergies enroute to a significant project aiming 500,000 tonnes of green hydrogen supply

TotalEnergies

TotalEnergies, the renowned French energy corporation, has initiated a tendering process aiming to secure an annual supply of 500,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. This move is integral to the firm's strategy to decarbonize its refineries across Europe.

Through the introduction of green hydrogen as a replacement for conventional fossil fuels, TotalEnergies anticipates curtailing around five million tonnes of CO2 emissions from its European refineries annually by the end of this decade.

The company's overarching decarbonization agenda is set to substitute the 500,000 tonnes of hydrogen currently utilized in six of its European refineries with green hydrogen produced from renewable sources by 2030. This initiative is congruent with TotalEnergies' target of achieving a 40% reduction in the net greenhouse gas emissions associated with its oil and gas activities by 2030, using 2015 as the baseline year.

Patrick Pouyanne, the Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, underscored that this extensive tendering process mirrors the firm's aspiration to transition to using exclusively green hydrogen in its European refineries within the 2030 timeframe.

He further highlighted the company's ongoing efforts in areas like La Mede, Grandpuits, Leuna, and Normandy, mentioning their outreach to potential third-party green hydrogen suppliers to expedite this decarbonization transition.

Highlighting previous partnerships, in November 2022, TotalEnergies collaborated with Air Liquide to innovate a system capable of generating 20,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually from partially renewable biogas at the Grandpuits facility. A subsequent alliance was formed with VNG in June this year, focusing on ensuring a consistent green hydrogen supply to the Leuna refinery located in Germany.

In a recent development, TotalEnergies has formalized an agreement with Air Liquide, securing a supply of between green and low carbon hydrogen, amounting to 15,000 tonnes annually, intended for the TotalEnergies' Normandy complex.
